In the Margins

Things I Read

This week I finished What to Do on Thursday, a book that aims to equip church members for counseling. Jay Adams raises the bar and sets high standards for those who seek to help others biblically. Some of the practical steps he provides would be greatly helpful for lay people who want to grow in their ability to counsel and care for others well.

Things I Listened To

I listened to the ACBC Truth in Love Podcast episode on “Gentle Parenting.” The "gentle parenting" movement has gained steam, and it’s important for Christians to understand the theological and philosophical ideas behind it. The episode offers thoughtful biblical evaluation—it’s a recommended 30-minute listen for parents and anyone who disciples families.

Things I Thought

I’ve been meditating on Mary and Martha from Luke 10. Mary’s actions, which were commended by the Lord, involved two things:

  • Sitting — a cessation of physical activity. She didn’t attempt to do anything else or multitask. She put her body in a receptive position, ready to learn.

  • Listening — an engagement of her mind, fully attentive to the words of Jesus. She oriented her entire self—body and mind—to receive from God.

It’s far too easy for me to avoid “sitting,” to try doing multiple things at once, and to hurry through quiet moments. This, inevitably, hinders my ability to “listen.” I’m asking: How can I, in my private time, ensure that I truly sit and listen?
