Summer is [Not] So Boring [But] a Great Opportunity

Summer is here! School is out, the weather is warming up, and the schedule of church activities has decreased a bit. Like every season, summer 2025 is a gift from God. With that in mind, let’s spend time in prayer and ask the Lord for wisdom for how to intentionally steward our time to love Him and others more. Here are a few of my ideas:

Rest well – it’s a gift to slow down on occasion. Christ himself set a great example for us in pursuing strategic rest and refreshment. A getaway, even a short one, is a blessing to your mind, soul, and body. For those of you over-achievers, it’s okay to sleep in. Linger over a cup of morning coffee. Spend extra time looking at bugs with your kids. Enjoy an extended walk. Read one more chapter of your book. Appreciate unhurried time with sweet family and friends.

Don’t get lazy – resting doesn’t mean you’re idle. Lean into your spiritual habits of Bible reading and prayer. Pick up a good book and read some every day. Pursue self-discipline in caring for your body. Guard your heart and your habits from excessive scrolling, habitual distraction, and the desire to “escape.”

Connect with people – God has providentially placed you in your family, your church, and your neighborhood. Consider ways to be God’s ambassador in your specific context. Invite that neighbor over for dinner. Share a cup of coffee with a fellow church member. Go on a date with your spouse. Meet at the park for a play date with the kids. Ask someone to read the Bible together. Look through your member directory and initiate a relationship with someone you don’t know very well.

Try something new – be curious and embrace an adventure! Take an early morning hike and watch the sunrise, shred some gnar with the Grace Rancho surf club, pitch a tent and enjoy a backyard campout, plant something and watch it grow, learn to ride a unicycle, write your own idea here:

A Quick Word For Kids! God’s command to make the most of the time He gives to us isn’t just for adults. Ask God and your parents for help to spend your time wisely. Consider how you could serve your family, your neighbors, and your church family. What ways could you learn and grow spiritually, physically, and mentally? How could you take steps toward godly manhood or womanhood this summer?
